IELTS - The International English Language Testing System
Overview: The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a widely recognized English proficiency test for non-native English speakers. It is used for educational, immigration, and professional purposes. The IELTS assesses the four key language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
Test Types:
1. IELTS Academic
- Purpose: For individuals applying to study at a higher education institution or seeking professional registration.
- Components:
- Listening: Four sections with a variety of question types, including multiple-choice, matching, and completion.
- Reading: Three sections with a range of texts, including academic articles, graphs, and charts. Tasks include identifying information, matching headings, and summarizing.
- Writing: Two tasks – Task 1 involves describing visual information (graphs, tables, diagrams), and Task 2 requires writing an essay in response to an argument or problem.
- Speaking: A face-to-face interview with an examiner, consisting of an introductory section, a long turn on a given topic, and a discussion related to the topic.
2. IELTS General Training
- Purpose: For individuals applying for immigration purposes, work experience, or non-academic training programs.
- Components:
- Listening: Similar to the Academic test but with a focus on everyday contexts and general communication.
- Reading: Three sections with texts related to general topics, including advertisements, notices, and articles. Tasks involve skimming, scanning, and understanding details.
- Writing: Two tasks – Task 1 involves writing a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal), and Task 2 requires writing an essay on a general topic.
- Speaking: Same format as the Academic test, focusing on everyday conversation skills.
Test Format:
1. Listening Section
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Format: Four sections, each with 10 questions. Audio recordings are played once only.
2. Reading Section
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Format: 40 questions based on three reading passages. Different question types may include multiple-choice, matching, and short answers.
3. Writing Section
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Format: Two tasks – Task 1 (150 words) and Task 2 (250 words). Responses are assessed on coherence, grammar, and vocabulary.
4. Speaking Section
- Duration: 11-14 minutes
- Format: Three parts – an introduction and interview, a long turn on a given topic, and a discussion with the examiner.
Scoring:
- Band Scores: IELTS scores are reported on a scale from 0 to 9. Each section receives a band score, and an overall band score is calculated as the average of the four sections.
- Band Descriptors: Scores correspond to proficiency levels from non-user (Band 1) to expert (Band 9).
